Sania Mirza, India’s tennis star and her Czech partner, Barbara Strycova has been knocked out of the Women’s doubles event at US Open after facing defeat against Frnch pair Carolina Garcia and Kristina Mladenovic in quarter-finals in New York. The French pair defeated Sania Mirza and her Czech partner Barbara Strycova in straight sets, 7-6(7-3), 6-1 in a match which lasted for only 69-minutes. Strycova and Mirza lost the first set 7-6 in just 45 minutes as they lost a service in mini-service break. The second set was quite easy for the French pair as they took an unbeaten 5-0 lead at the initial stage before finishing the match 6-1. Leander Paes and Rohan Bopanna, India’s doubles expert, have been ruled out of the ongoing US Open competition, although Sania Mirza with her Croatian partner Ivan Dodig advanced to the next round in Mixed Doubles event. Sania Mirza, partnering with Dodig, the pair who had won US Open Mixed Doubles Title in 2014, played amazingly and won against US pair of Donald Young and Taylor Townsend in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 in just 62 minutes. India’s Pranjala Yadlapalli, in the junior girls’ event defeated American Victoria Emma 6-3, 6-2. Leander Paes and his partner Andre Begemann played well but lost to French-Israeli pair of Stephen Rboert and Dudi Sela by a close margin, 6-2, 5-7, 4-6. On the other hand, Rohan Bopanna with his Danish partner Frederik Nielsen lost brutally to American Brian Baker and Kiwi Marcus Daniell 2-6, 6-7 (5-7). Leander Paes, India’s famous Tennis star was disappointed after he has not been assigned room in the games village of Rio Olympics, according to the reports. Paes, who has represented India in Olympics said that he was disappointed while speaking to a leading daily newspaper of the country. Paes who arrived at games village on Thursday evening had to change in the chef De Mission Rakesh Gupta’s room. Recently reports emerged that Indian Hockey Team, too faced some difficulties in the games village as there was shortage of chairs and TV screens. Coach Reolant Oltmans had complained that the players’ apartments are not properly furnished. The teams of Australia as well as others, too, were disappointed on unfurnished rooms. And the Australian team even had to be evacuated as the fire was erupted in the basement. “I am slightly disappointed that having played six Olympics for India, I haven't been given a place to stay. I was playing a tournament in New York and took the first flight on its completion. The match got over at 8 and took a 10.45 flight to Rio,” said Paes. The three rooms which were assigned, one is with coach Zeeshan Ali, one is with other Tennis star Rohan Bopanna and the third is with team physio. Earlier there were reports that Paes had declined to share the room with Rohan Boppana due to the rift between the two. Coach Zeeshan Ali, on this matter, clarified, “There have been speculations that Leander has complained that he doesn't want to share a room with Rohan (Bopanna), but there's no truth to it. I and the organisers were aware that he was to reach Rio on Thursday (August 4). Sure he will be low on time for the match on August 6, but he practiced on arriving will be ready for the match.” Leander Paes, earlier, agreed to travel with the team on August 1 to Rio but instead he was paying in New York in World Team Tennis Tournament. Top seeds women's doubles, Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis have defeated the fourth seeded Casey Dellacqua and Yaroslava Shvedova 6-3, 6-3 to claim the US Open title. Indo-Swiss pair has taken only 69 minutes to conquer the Australian-Kazakh pair at the Arthur Ashe stadium. Sania-Martina duos remained undeterred to bring about the third and fourth successive service breaks to extend their advantage to 5-2. Sania served out the first set at 6-3 in 31 minutes. They hit 16 winners, four more than their opponents, to claim the first set, converting three of the eight break points. Dellacqua-Shvedova were able break their opponents only once. Sania and Martina has entered the title round easing the past Italian 11th seeds Sara Errani and Flavia Pennetta by 6-4, 6-1. Dellacqua-Shvedova defeated unseeded German-American pair of Anna-Lena Groenefeld and Coco Vandeweghe by 6-7 (3), 7-5, 7-5 to reach the final. Leander Paes of India has won the mixed-doubles title at Wimbledon along with Martina Hingis to give him 16 Grand Slam titles in his career, eight in men’s doubles and eight in mixed. Tennis ace Leander Paes is once again at his vintage best as he partnered Martina Hingis to win the Wimbledon mixed doubles title. The pair beat fifth seed Austrian-Hungarian duo of Alexander Peya and Timea Babos 6-1, 6-1 in a match that lasted only 40 minutes. Paes has won Grand Slams with four different male partners, starting with the French Open and Wimbledon with Mahesh Bhupathi in 1999. Success came to him when he partnered with Martin Damm, Lukas Dlouhy and Radek Stepanek. Paes is strongly linked with Bhupathi and Stepanek. Paes had 24 partners in mixed doubles, winning Grand Slam titles with four of them, Lisa Raymond, Martina Navratilova, Cara Black and Martina Hingis.Paes has proven over the years that he has the ability to get along with players from diverse backgrounds and ages. India's Saina Nehwal has regained the women's singles World No.1 spot in the latest Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings released on Thursday. The Hyderabadi became No.1 for the first time exactly two weeks back. She dropped to No.2 position last week but once again overtook China's reigning Olympic champion Li Xuerui to retake the top spot. The 25-year-old has had a good 2015. She won the India Grand Prix Gold in January, India Open Superseries in March, and reached the All England Open final also last month.
