Loosing weight can be done in many ways. But if you choose to loose your weight by using fitness foods, you are going to be backfired, a new study suggests. The study was published in the Journal of Marketing Research. According to a study performed by the Pennsylvania State University researchers, it was revealed that, the 'fitness' branding encourages consumers to eat more of those foods and to exercise less, potentially undermining their efforts to lose or control their weight. “Unless a food was forbidden by their diet, branding the product as fit increased consumption for those trying to watch their weight,” said study author Hans Baumgartner from Pennsylvania State University in the US, and colleagues. “To make matters worse, these eaters also reduced their physical activity, apparently seeing the fit food as a substitute for exercise,” the researchers said. For the study, the researchers investigated the effects of fitness-branded food in 'restrained eaters'. All the participants were given trail-mix style snacks marked either 'fitness' or 'trail mix' with a picture of running shoes which was added to the packaging to make the 'fitness' snack appear even healthier. For those who were specifically trying to watch their weight, the effect of labelling was significant. Overall, the researchers observed that it caused them to eat far more of the snack marked 'Fitness'. They also observed that the snackers who ate the ‘fitness’ brand also chose to expend less energy during the exercise phase of experiment. By Lizitha
Practicing yoga can give relief from countless ailments. A recent study has proved that even a single, 20-minute session of yoga can significantly improve brain function immediately. The results were reported in the Journal of Physical Activity and Health. The study was performed on 30 young and female subjects, a session of Hatha yoga significantly improved participants speed and accuracy on tests of working memory and inhibitory control, two measures of brain function associated with the ability to maintain focus and take in, retain and use new information. "Participants performed significantly better immediately after the yoga practice than after moderate to vigorous aerobic exercise for the same amount of time," said researchers at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign."Imaging studies in multiple types of chronic pain patients show their brains differ from healthy control subjects," said M. Catherine Bushnell, scientific director, Division of Intramural Research, National Institutes of Health (NIH), US. "Studies of people with depression show they also have reduced grey matter. Our research shows that grey matter loss is directly related to the pain when, we take depression into account," he added. Researchers observed that yogis have more grey matter in multiple brain regions. Decreased grey matter can lead to memory impairment, emotional problems and decreased cognitive functioning. "Practising yoga has the opposite effect on the brain as does chronic pain," said Bushnell. Experts suggest practicing yoga for at least 20 minutes a day. The practice of the postures (asans) strengthens the body, creates a feeling of well being and can even make you smarter. By Lizitha
If you want to bring down your body weight, keep track of your weight by stepping on a scale everyday. This was proved by a study performed by the researchers from Cornell University. For the study, researchers collected and analyzed data from 162 volunteers. They were randomly separated into an intervention group and a control group. Individuals in the intervention group were first given a target of 1 percent weight loss, which they could lose in any manner they chose. "Because we didn't prescribe, everyone found their own way of losing the weight," whether they reduced portion size, stopped snacking or skipped a meal, Levitsky said. Losing 1 percent of body weight requires most people to cut only about 150 calories a day for two weeks. Once they maintained that weight loss for 10 days, the program then gave them a new target to lose another 1 percent, and so on. The goal was to lose a total of 10 percent of their starting body weight. From the results, the researchers believed that steeping on the scale and tracking it can help in maintaining the body weight. The findings are detailed in the Journal of Obesity. By Lizitha
Do you know essential tips to prevent malaria? As peak season for malaria is approaching, it is important to safeguard yourselves from deadly malaria disease attack. The main reason for increasing the malaria cases is not being hygienic. Improved awareness initiative programs will help to reduce the malaria cases. Here are few malarial tips suggested by Dr. Rajkumar Chaudhary, Hon. Secretary, Association of Hospitals. 6 malaria prevention tips: • Protect yourself from mosquito bites by sleeping under an insecticide-treated mosquito net. It does not have any ill effects on humans. But make sure to select a mosquito net that is in good condition with no holes. • Spray the room with an insecticide before entering.• Wear loose and long sleeve shirts, trousers and socks when out at night. It is good to prefer light colored clothes as mosquitoes get attracted to dark colored clothes. • Apply a reliable insect repellent containing diethyltoluamide (DEET) to your clothes and exposed parts of skin. If you are using any sunscreen lotion, apply it first and then apply DEET second. Even it is good if you use a sunscreen that contains a repellant.• Cover bedroom doors and windows with fine mesh netting. Use air-conditioning or a fan in the room, as mosquitoes are less active in cooler temperatures.• Mosquitoes thrive very well in humid, hot corners. So prevent breeding by keeping your doors and windows closed from the areas with constant wet grass, stagnant water, puddles and stagnant water in cans. Malaria symptoms: The symptoms of malaria start around 7-10 days after being bitten by a carrier mosquito. The patient feels fatigued, has bouts of fever every few hours, shivers even when the outside temperature is normal, and suffers from headache, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. If immune system is weak, the symptoms may get triggered sooner than usual. If these symptoms are found it is advised to get diagnosed under doctor consultation, as early diagnosis helps to treat the disease sooner. By Lizitha

As per the American College of Cardiology study, it was revealed that omega-3 fatty acids may help restrict further damage after a Heart attack. During the study patients taking 4 Grams of prescribed omega 3 fatty acid capsules daily for 6 months after an attack had shown significance in heart function compared to the patients taken Placebo. It was known that omega 3 fatty acids lower the inflammation and protect against further declines in heart function. Heart function was measured by an expansion of the left ventricular endosystolic volume index. Patients taking omega-3 fatty acids also had significantly less evidence of fibrosis, a thickening or scarring of the areas of the heart remote from the heart attack, which can develop when the surviving heart muscle works harder and under high pressure to compensate for the damage to the heart. Senior author Raymond W. Kwong stated that “patients who were able to mount a substantial change in levels of omega-3 fatty acids in their blood derived the most benefit”. He also said that intake of higher amounts of omega 3 fatty acids will lead to some adverse reactions like increased bleeding. In addition he said the daily 4 gram dose is roughly equivalent to someone eating a large, 8-ounce serving of salmon every day for six months. However it was a positive result from the research study. It is good to concentrate on eating diet containing omega 3 fatty acids in order to protect the heart from further attacks. Aw: Lizitha

When was the last time you stopped and took a long, hard look at yourself? With days getting over before you know it, life can get so busy at times that you tend to forget to look after yourself. Don't worry though. You can make improvements in your daily routine, which can make your lifestyle better and healthier. Here are some quick tips... Keep yourself hydratedWhen you are dehydrated, it slows down your blood flow leaving you tired and listless. Drink water when you wake up to give yourself a boost of energy. Make it a point to drink at least eight to 10 glasses of water during the day. Don't skip breakfastWhile skipping any meal isn't good, missing your breakfast is one of the biggest mistake you can make. Research shows that skipping breakfast makes one burn fewer calories during the day. This is especially true for those on a diet. Several dieters assume that a skipped meal is beneficial in reducing the calorie intake when this isn't true at all. Have snacksSnacking can actually be good, however, ensure that what you eat is healthy. Snacking on dried fruit, low fat cheeses or yoghurts can keep your metabolism running on high gear and keep you energetic throughout the day. Exercise regularlyMake exercising a fun activity, not a chore. Use the stairs instead of the elevator, walk or cycle instead of taking the cab or bus, and brisk walk for 20 minutes daily. Listen to music while you walk or ask a friend for company. Reduce alcohol intakeWhile indulging in alcohol daily doesn't slow down your metabolism, studies show that having it everyday can result in weight gain because your body processes alcohol first, leaving the calories you ate from your meal until last. This means that those calories are most likely to be stored as body fat. Don't go on fad dietsWhen you regularly keep going on different diets, you are depriving your body of essential nutrients. You might be unintentionally consuming fewer calories than are required to keep your body active — this results in lethargy. If you really must diet, make sure you consult an expert who will know what diet to put you on. And don't expect miracles overnight. Healthy diets take time to show results. Take a breakRelaxing and taking breaks will make you feel rejuvenated both physically as well as mentally. Sleep for seven to eight hours every night and make it a point to relax during the day. Even unwinding for a few minutes daily makes a big difference.
