The Udupi City Municipal Council, which met today discussed widely on the plastic ban proposal today and a resolution was made by the council. Accordingly, use of plastic (be it even carry bags) would be completely banned in the town, which would be effective from September 15. The municipal council president Kiran Kumar has said that Udupi had always been a tourist spot and it was a responsibility to keep the city clean. He even asked the people of Udupi to maintain the name Temple City. Although, there was some opposition from the members, who came out with statements like alternatives should be made before banning the plastic carry bags for which the president has said that jobs must be given to associations involved with creating paper and nylon bags.
Ban on plastic has been in place in many tourist places since plastic is not only hazardous to health but even blocks the city drainage system. The president of the council cited some cities such as Ooty, Goa, Mysore and Madikkeri wherein plastic was banned long back. Although the resolution was made, the strict implementation is what matters, said political observers. They asked whether the council will also look into the efficient implementation of the decision or not.
